Star and Constellation Data
Here are links to sites that have useful information about stars and constellations.
- tcaep.co.uk
- Extensive science and math information published by Scenta and The Institute of Physics.
Lists the stars in the constellations and gives their coordinates, but not distances.
Links to the individual stars give more data, including parallax
(from which distances can be obtained).
- Dolan’s pages
- Compiled by Chris Dolan at U Wisconsin, Madison. Lots of information about
conststellations and their contents, individual stars, and the Messier objects.
Very complete.
- Frank’s Astronomy pages
- Descriptions of the constellations, their mythology, and their Messier
objects. Links to maps of the constellations.
- Constellations from
Jim Kaler’s
STARS pages
- All kinds of good stuff including descriptions of and stories about numerous stars and
constellations.
- Juergen Kummer’s pages
- Links to constellations list individual stars. Individual star pages give spectroscopic
data and distances, but not coordinates. Also links to several different categories of
astronomical objects on interest.
- Dave’s Astronomy Pictures
- Stunning long-exposure photographs of several prominent constellations.
- Utah Skies
- Maps of the constellations and pictures and descriptions of the interesting objects in
the constellations. No coordinates that I can find, but it does
give magniturdes of prominent stars.
- Wikipedia
- OK, once you have the names of the interesting stars or objects in your
constellation, you should at least check this obvious place. It has
lots of information about everything, including stellar coordinates and
distances. I’d love to hate Wikipedia, but it’s just too good.
- Astronomy Picture of the Day
- This is a great source for beautiful puctures of all sorts of sky objects,
with good descriptions and explanations. Has an archive that can be searched.
