Join Astronomy/Geology 1070 in Sakai

Get a Sakai Account

First, access the Sakai portal at wyosakai.uwyo.edu/xsl-portal. This prompts you for a username and password. If you don’t have a username and password yet (because you have not used a Sakai course before), create a new account by selecting the “I’m a new user, sign me up” link. Once there, enter the required information and then click the “Create Account” button.

When you enter your first and last names, please use the name under which you are registered for the course. Please also do not leave those fields blank. If your name on Sakai is different from your name on the registrar’s course roster, the course grades will be alphabetized differently in the two lists. This may sound like a small annoyance, but its effect is that transferring grades between Sakai and my spreadsheet becomes accident-prone. As a result, I will remove participants whose names are not the registered names of students in the class.

Join ASTR/GEOL 1070

When you log in to your Sakai account, you are placed at your “My Workspace” page. Now you need to actually join ASTR/GEOL 1070.

On the left is a box with the heading “MY SETTINGS”. Below in that box, click the “Membership” link.

This takes you to the “Membership” page. In a gray bar under the “Membership” heading are two links, one to “My Current Sites” and the other to “Joinable Sites”. Since you are not currently a member of ASTR/GEOL 1070, you need to join it. Click on the “Joinable Sites” link.

This takes you to a page listing all the sites that can be joined. Find this course “ASTR/GEOL 1070-01 Fa11 Earth: Its physical environment (Barrans, Fall 2011),” click on its “Join” link, and you’re in. A link to the course will now be displayed in the tan “Quicklinks” bar near the top of the page.

Clicking on the link takes you directly to the course.

Take Quizzes and Surveys

To take a quiz or survey, find the “Course Tools” box on the left and click on the “Tests & Quizzes” link. This takes you to a page listing all the assessments available for you to take.
